For families already managing tight food budgets, the festive season can bring additional pressure when school and ECD feeding programmes close.
Through our Holiday Buckets of Nutrition campaign, we’re rallying support to help provide supplementary food to families during this period. By preparing early, we can source, pack and distribute food through our trusted community partners before the holiday food gap begins.
Where this campaign began
In December 2023, journalist Estelle Ellis drew attention to the challenges faced by children in the Eastern Cape who lose access to regular school meals during the festive season.
Daily Maverick invited its readers to be part of the response, while SA Harvest provided the food rescue infrastructure, logistics and community partnerships needed to turn that support into practical food assistance. Together, the initiative reached 1,702 families.
Today, SA Harvest’s Holiday Buckets of Nutrition campaign builds on that collective effort, rallying support to provide supplementary food to families when school and ECD feeding programmes close for the festive season.
The need is predictable, and so is our opportunity to prepare. By coming together before the holidays begin, we can help more families access the nutrition they need.
