Food Rescue

Food waste in South Africa exceeds 10,3 million tonnes a year, while 20 million people experience food insecurity every day. Feeding hungry people and stopping good food from going to waste underpins everything we do. We rescue and redistribute food to those who need it most.

Purpose

20 million South Africans go to bed hungry every night

Access to adequate and nutritious food is at the core of one of South Africa’s most urgent human crises. Food inequality and poor nutrition have negatively impacted over half of South Africa’s children, resulting in malnutrition, high infant mortality, cognitive development delays, long-term disease (such as diabetes), a failure to thrive academically as well as many other social problems.

Human Right

Access to food is a constitutional right

In section 27(1)(b) of the constitution of the Republic of South Africa, it states that “everyone has the right to have access to sufficient food and water.” SA Harvest believes that every South African has the right to sufficient, nutritious food – a foundation to living a dignified life. The right to food requires that food be available, accessible and adequate for everyone without discrimination at all times.
