Food rescue organisation remains strong under new leadership, expanding impact while tackling the root causes of hunger.
SA Harvest, South Africa’s leading food rescue organisation, today announced a strategic evolution in leadership as founder Alan Browde transitions into a governance and fundraising management role while stepping up his efforts to tackle hunger at a systemic level. While Alan steps away from day-to-day operational leadership, he remains deeply committed to SA Harvest as a board member and director of SA Harvest’s fundraising effort. Alan will also give time to his new initiative, Union Against Hunger, which he originally created as SA Harvest’s systemic intervention entity. It will focus on addressing the legislative and structural barriers to food security in South Africa.
Since its inception, SA Harvest has delivered over 80 million kilograms of rescued food, proving that hunger is not a matter of scarcity but of access. Under Alan’s leadership, the organisation has grown into a national force, bridging the gap between surplus food and the millions of South Africans who need it most.
Now, as SA Harvest continues to scale its operational impact, Union Against Hunger will drive long-term systemic change, advocating for legislative reform to address the injustice of food waste and hunger coexisting in a nation with surplus food.
“This is certainly not a farewell; it’s a new chapter. SA Harvest will continue to do what it does best – rescuing and delivering food at scale – while Union Against Hunger will focus on ensuring no South African goes hungry due to systemic negligence,” says Browde. “I will remain an integral part of SA Harvest’s journey as a board member and in securing donor support, while my focus expands to ending hunger at the root level.”
Seamless leadership transition and continued growth
Ozzy Nel, COO and Director of SA Harvest
COO Ozzy Nel will assume interim day-to-day operational leadership of the organisation supported by SA Harvest’s excellent executive team. As a key driver of SA Harvest’s logistical expansion, operational excellence, and community impact, Ozzy has been deeply involved in shaping the organisation’s success alongside Alan.
“Alan’s leadership and vision have set a standard of excellence that we will continue to uphold. It has been an incredible journey working alongside him, learning from his passion and dedication,” says Ozzy Nel. “Even though he has vacated day-to-day operational management he remains a major force in the strategy, effectiveness and sustainability of SA Harvest.”
While SA Harvest remains relentlessly focused on food rescue and distribution, the movement Union Against Hunger will work in alignment to push for policy changes that will lead to lasting food security in South Africa.
