Where does most food waste happen in South Africa?

By

Unlike more developed countries, most of our food waste happens before distribution. There are many reasons for this, most of them related to flaws in the food ecosystem, the absence of government intervention, lack of transparency and management of data. The good news is that there are solutions – and SA Harvest is championing a variety of initiatives to bring about collaboration and data sharing.

What can you do? Buy direct from farmers and fresh produce markets, and be a proud purchaser of wonky fruit & veg. So much waste happens because consumers control demand – and wonky veg that’s less than perfect simply doesn’t make it onto supermarket shelves. Look out for opportunities to join SA Harvest in making your voice heard in the fight against food waste… coming soon.
