Tools for Transporters: How Helping Out is Transforming Logistics, Business, and Lives

By

The Road Freight Association’s latest industry webinar held on 6 May 2025, with the topic “Tools for Transporters: Business Perks of Helping Out,” spotlighted the powerful potential of partnerships between the logistics sector and non-profit food rescue operations.

With over 10 million tons of edible food wasted annually in South Africa (and 18 million people going hungry) the conversation could not be more urgent. At the heart of the discussion was the simple, radical idea that logistics companies can play a critical role in solving hunger.

Hosted by the RFA, the webinar brought together Jacques Greeff, founder and CEO of IOX Solutions (currently working with SA Harvest as a logistics expert and industry consultant) and Ozzy Nel, COO of SA Harvest, to explore the business case for transporters to get involved in food rescue.

“It’s not just about moving goods. It’s about moving the needle on social impact,” said Greeff. “When transporters align with purpose-driven partners like SA Harvest, the result is not only operational efficiency, but genuine societal value.”

Why the Freight Sector Holds the Key

It became clear that transporters are uniquely positioned to close the gap between surplus and need. SA Harvest’s infrastructure (already feeding over 10,000 people daily through 210+ donors and 243 community-based organizations), depends on reliable, smart transport solutions. The conversation unpacked practical strategies for integrating Corporate Social Investment (CSI) into logistics workflows. SA Harvest’s Ozzy Nel, underscored the importance of strategic alignment:

“This isn’t charity. It’s a collaborative redesign of how food flows in our country. Our partners understand that purpose and profit don’t have to be at odds. Together, we’re rewriting the rules of what’s possible.”

Key Takeaways:

The session forms part of SA Harvest’s broader mission to create systemic change, which is not just by feeding people, but by disrupting the status quo that allows hunger and food waste to coexist.
