Honouring Lindsay Hopkins: A Pioneer of Food Rescue at SA Harvest

Honouring a Pioneer Who Stood with Us

Every movement has its quiet pioneers – people who step forward when the need is greatest and help lay the foundations for something bigger than themselves. For SA Harvest, Lindsay Hopkins is one of those people.

Today, Lindsay is facing a personal health challenge. Just as she stood with communities during times of crisis, this is our moment to stand with her.

From Lockdown to Food Rescue

When South Africa went into national lockdown in 2020, hunger became one of the most urgent challenges the country had ever faced. Shops were closed, jobs were lost, and warehouses were full of food that could not reach the people who needed it most. Out of that crisis, SA Harvest was born – and Lindsay was there from the very beginning, helping establish our KwaZulu‑Natal operations at a time when food rescue was not just important, but absolutely critical.

She played a central role in securing the Kings Park warehouse and building the systems and relationships that allowed food to start flowing across the province. Those early days were tough, but Lindsay’s energy and determination gave the team confidence.

Standing Strong During the KZN Riots

Her commitment was tested again during the KwaZulu‑Natal riots in 2021. With supply chains disrupted and communities cut off from food, Lindsay worked side by side with the team to set up an emergency tent facility at Kings Park. From that base, millions of meals were distributed to families who had suddenly lost access to food. In the middle of chaos and danger, she never once said it could not be done. She simply focused on what needed to happen and kept the team moving forward.

A Lasting Legacy

Lindsay’s greatest legacy lies not only in the operations she helped build, but in the people she mentored. Many younger team members found confidence and purpose under her guidance, and the systems she helped put in place continue to support SA Harvest’s work today.

Standing With Lindsay Today

Now, as she faces her own health challenge, it feels right that the same community she helped build can stand alongside her. Lindsay gave so much of herself to this mission and to the communities we serve. Every contribution will assist her treatment journey and make a real difference.

Sharing her story with others is another way to extend the support she so richly deserves. Movements like SA Harvest are built by people like Lindsay. When one of our own needs support, we stand together.
