Cooking for a Cause: Mimecast and SA Harvest at Nanga Vhutshilo

By

On Giving Tuesday, 2 December 2025, Mimecast volunteers joined SA Harvest at Nanga Vhutshilo – Choose Life in Soweto. The day formed part of SA Harvest’s Giving Tuesday campaign, a global movement that celebrates generosity and selfless acts of service. Every gift of time, toys, talent, and resources reflected the spirit of Giving Tuesday – giving children moments of joy and a nourishing meal.

About Nanga Vhutshilo

Founded in 2006 by Ma Sibongile Mkhwanazi, Nanga Vhutshilo (Choose Life in Venda) was born after her son’s HIV disclosure. From that moment, Sibongile committed herself to building a centre that would empower vulnerable children and families affected by poverty and HIV/AIDS.

Today, Nanga Vhutshilo provides psychosocial support, education, nutrition, and household assistance. It serves thousands of meals each month and offers children a safe space to grow, learn, and imagine possibility.

Arrival and Welcome

Volunteers arrived early, welcomed by Sibongile, SA Harvest’s team, and radio host AB DaCoster. He set the tone, explaining the challenges families face and why every single meal matters. His presence kept the team motivated and guided throughout the day.

In the Kitchen

Under Chef Pinky’s guidance, the Mimecast team prepared a meal for 50 children using rescued ingredients. Wraps, fries, juice, sweet treats, and ice cream were on the menu.

AB DaCoster kept the energy high, playing his mixes and encouraging the volunteers. The kitchen was alive with dancing, singing, and laughter. Volunteers cooked in high spirits; every action tied to the purpose of serving the children at Nanga Vhutshilo.

Meal Service

Lunch was served in bright child-friendly packs containing wraps, fries, toys, and drinks. Volunteers were cared for too, with refreshments and SA Harvest-branded aprons.

Key Impact

Mimecast’s R10,000 donation to Nanga Vhutshilo is more than a contribution – it is a seed planted.

“We don’t go into communities, offer them a meal for the day, gain access to their story, then only to leave them in the same situation we found them. The Mimecast team has planted a seed that we hope will grow to impact many more lives and encourage other organisations to raise their hands and also plant seeds in our communities.”
