A Year of Massive Impact

By

Thank you for making it possible!

We’re celebrating 12 months of rescuing food and fighting hunger – and the impact our generous financial, food, logistics and professional partners have made possible:

  1. Reach: This year, we’ve supported 225 active beneficiary organisations, delivering food weekly to communities across South Africa.
  2. Millions of Meals: Between January and November 2024, we’ve provided more than 16.6 million meals, significantly alleviating hunger nationwide.
  3. Rescuing Food: In the same period, over 4.1 million kilograms of surplus food was rescued, reducing waste and feeding those in need.
  4. Climate Change Impact: Every ton of food rescued means 800kg of methane gas is prevented from landfill emissions. This year alone, by rescuing 4,1 million kilograms of food, we’ve prevented 7,79 million kilograms of C02 emissions, the equivalent of methane from food waste in landfills.
  5. Vast Distances Covered: SA Harvest’s fleet travelled approximately 239,000 kilometres this year (and counting), ensuring perfectly good food is rescued and the gift of nutrition reaches even the most remote areas.
  6. Collaborative Efforts: Partnerships with logistics companies are crucial to our operations as our unique model is to distribute food to beneficiaries at no charge. That makes us different to other food banks and charity feeding schemes. We also partner closely with agribusinesses.
  7. Nutritious Deliveries: Top rescued foods for 2024 include cabbage (480,227 kg), maize meal (348,229 kg), and carrots (320,690 kg), providing essential nutrients to communities.
  8. Diverse Offerings: Beyond staples, SA Harvest distributes items like oat milk (78,037 litres) and naartjies (75,424 kg), promoting balanced diets.
  9. Combating Waste: By redirecting products rescued from across the food supply chain – from 58,815 kg of potato chips to 45,659 kg of mushrooms – we’ve had an epic year of reducing food waste.
  10. Daily Essentials: It’s been a year of exceptional support from the baking sector, with 63,695 kg of bread products distributed, ensuring that basic food items were accessible to those in need.
