How your donation helps power food rescue

Food rescue is not just goodwill. It takes coordination, vehicles, warehousing, sorting, food safety, data and trusted community relationships. Your donation helps keep that system moving.

Why donors trust SA Harvest

How will my donation be used?

Your donation supports the system that enables SA Harvest to rescue good surplus food and move it to where it is needed.

This includes food collection, transport, warehousing, sorting, food-safety processes, data management and redistribution through vetted community-based organisations.

Unless you donate to a specific campaign or project, your contribution will be allocated where it can create the greatest operational impact. This helps SA Harvest maintain a reliable food-rescue network rather than funding only a once-off meal or delivery.

Funds received through approved international giving partners, including OzHarvest Australia and CAF America, are intended to support SA Harvest’s charitable food-rescue and redistribution work in South Africa, subject to the applicable partner arrangements.

What does “R1.20 per meal” mean?

R1.20 is SA Harvest’s current operational efficiency benchmark for enabling a meal through its food-rescue and redistribution system. It is not the retail price of a complete meal.

Most of the food SA Harvest redistributes is donated. Financial contributions help fund the infrastructure around that food, including collection, transport, warehousing, food-safety controls, data and community redistribution.

The actual cost per meal may vary according to food volumes, location, transport distances and operating conditions. R1.20 should therefore be understood as a benchmark rather than a guarantee that each R1.20 contribution directly funds a specific individual meal.

Which payment methods can I use?

You can support SA Harvest using any of the following payment methods:

• Direct EFT or bank transfer
• Card payment through PayFast
• SnapScan
• OzHarvest Australia’s approved giving pathway for eligible Australian donors
• CAF America for eligible US-based donations

Some international donors may also be able to use PayFast, depending on the countries and cards supported by the platform. The confirmed country list will be added once received from Finance.

Your bank or payment provider may apply transaction, currency-conversion or international transfer fees.

Is my online payment secure?

Online donations are processed through established third-party payment providers, including PayFast and SnapScan.

Your payment information is entered and processed through the relevant provider’s secure payment environment. SA Harvest will never ask you to send your full card details by email, WhatsApp or social media.

Before completing a payment, please confirm that you are using the official SA Harvest website and that the payment page displays the correct provider.

Can I make a monthly donation?

Yes. Select the monthly giving option where it is available through PayFast, choose your contribution amount and complete the payment process. You may also arrange a scheduled payment directly through your bank or payment provider.

Monthly donations help SA Harvest plan more reliably and maintain the logistics, warehousing and operational capacity needed to rescue and redistribute food throughout the year.

For recurring donations made through PayFast, you can cancel directly through PayFast or contact SA Harvest for assistance. If you arranged a scheduled EFT or recurring card payment directly with your bank or payment provider, you will need to amend or cancel it with that provider.

Can I receive a Section 18A tax receipt?

SA Harvest may issue a South African Section 18A tax receipt for qualifying donations received directly by the organisation, provided that the required donor and donation information has been supplied.

When donating online, select the option requesting a Section 18A tax receipt and complete the secure request form. For EFT donations, please also provide proof of payment.

• Individual donors: full name and surname; physical address; South African ID number; income tax number; cellphone number; and email address.
• Companies: full registered name and trading name; physical address; company registration number; income tax number (not the VAT number); contact cellphone number; and email address.
• Australian tax-deductible receipts are issued through OzHarvest Australia for eligible donations made through its approved process.
• US tax documentation is issued through CAF America for eligible donations made through its platform.

SA Harvest does not issue Australian or US tax receipts directly.

Can I donate from outside South Africa?

Yes. International supporters can donate through PayFast where their country and card are supported, or make an international bank transfer using the SWIFT details provided in the bank-transfer section of this page.

Australian and US-based donors also have dedicated giving pathways through OzHarvest Australia and CAF America respectively. These pathways may allow qualifying donors to access the relevant tax treatment in their own country.

A South African Section 18A tax receipt does not automatically provide a tax benefit outside South Africa. International donors should use the appropriate giving pathway and obtain independent tax advice where necessary.

How can US-based donors make a tax-advantaged donation?

US-based donors can support SA Harvest through CAF America.

CAF America facilitates charitable giving to validated international organisations and manages the applicable US donation and tax-documentation process.

Select “Donate through CAF America” on the donation page and follow the instructions provided on the CAF America platform.

The relevant US tax documentation is issued through CAF America rather than directly by SA Harvest. Tax treatment depends on the donor’s circumstances and applicable US tax requirements.

How can Australian donors make a tax-deductible donation?

Eligible Australian supporters can donate to support SA Harvest through the approved OzHarvest Australia giving pathway.

The donation is made through OzHarvest Australia and designated to support SA Harvest’s charitable food-rescue and redistribution work in South Africa. Eligible donors receive the relevant Australian tax-deductible receipt from OzHarvest Australia, not directly from SA Harvest.

Donations must be made through the approved OzHarvest Australia process to qualify for the applicable Australian tax treatment. Donations made directly to SA Harvest do not qualify for an Australian tax-deductible receipt.

What should I use as my reference for an EFT donation?

Please use your full name or organisation name, followed by the campaign name where applicable.

Examples:

• Thandi Mokoena – General Donation
• ABC Company – Mandela Day

This helps SA Harvest identify and allocate your donation correctly.

To request a Section 18A tax receipt, complete the secure request form and provide proof of payment together with the required donor details.
