SA HARVEST collects quality surplus food in refrigerated vehicles from a variety of sources and delivers it direct, without delay, and free of charge, to a wide variety of organisations that feed food-vulnerable people on a daily basis.
Because our business model enables us to deliver PERISHABLE as well as NON-PERISHABLE food, our recipient organisations get a sufficient variety of food types that enables them to provide full and nourishing meals to their people.
SA Harvest is based on Australia’s highly successful OzHarvest, which, in addition to South Africa is being replicated in the U.K., Thailand and New Zealand.
OzHarvest was founded by entrepreneur Ronni Kahn in 2004. Kahn, an ex-South African, has given outstanding service to her country, which has been recognised through a host of awards, including the Order of Australia (AO).
So impactful is OzHarvest that the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) chose them to be their partner in Australasia in the fight against food waste.
In the 15 years of its existence, OzHarvest has delivered more than 100 million meals and has saved more than 35,000 tons of food that would otherwise gone to landfill.
THIRTEEN MILLION South Africans go hungry every day while ONE THIRD (10 million tons) of all the food we produce goes to waste !!
These two irreconcilable realities are the motivation for the founding of SA HARVEST.
SA HARVEST is based on four pillars:
FOOD RESCUE – Eliminating hunger and food waste through the redistribution of quality surplus food underpins everything we do. Our modus operandi is unique in South Africa as we use refrigerated vehicles, which means we can deliver PERISHABLE as well as NON-PERISHABLE food, enabling our recipient organisations to get a sufficient variety of food to provide full and nourishing meals to their people.
EDUCATION – Raising awareness about food waste, food rescue, food security and nutrition, and driving a process that helps people to become food self-sufficient through sustainable and appropriate educational programmes and technologies.
ENGAGEMENT – Involving the community in reducing food waste and alleviating hunger. This is achieved mainly via a programme of volunteering where people and corporations donate their time to SA HARVEST’s efforts in the community.
INNOVATION – As innovators in the food rescue space we constantly look for new solutions to combat food waste and hunger in South Africa.
